From Barbarella to Laverne Cox, BFI Flare is back for 2017. London’s annual LGBT+ film festival has clocked up over 30 years now, challenging the heteronormativity on our screens with a programme of exciting new films, iconic classics and engaging events. This year sees the festival open with the timely ‘Against the Law’, starring Daniel Mays and Mark Gatiss. It explores the life of Peter Wildeblood whose prosecution and brave campaigning led to the partial decriminalisation of homosexuality 50 years ago. Other highlights include the Alan Cumming drama ‘After Louie’, documentaries about Cece McDonald and Armistead Maupin, and a talk with ‘But I’m a Cheerleader’ director, Jamie Babbit. Incredibly, there’s still tickets available for a sing-a-long screening of ‘Gentlemen Prefer Blondes’, so get your Jane Russell sassy faces to the BFI Southbank sharpish.
