Queen Mary University
Queen Mary University is a public research university in London. There are several campuses around the city: Holborn, Smithfield and Whitechapel, with the main campus in Mile End. Queen Mary was recently ranked number 34 out of 130 universities by the Complete University Guide, it is a major centre for biomedical research and has a strategic partnership with the University of Warwick for the joint teaching of undergraduates and research collaboration.
Founded in the mid-Victorian era to help local residents of the East End of London with the aim to ‘improve the scientific and technical knowledge of apprentices and workmen engaged in industrial life’, the college began admitting students from London Hospital Medical College who were preparing for the preliminary medical examination in 19??. Thus began many years of the two institutions working together, which culminated in 1995 with the creation of the entity called Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry.
