Cool London hotels have cool locations – and the Qbic design hotel London is located near the iconic Tower Bridge. Construction of the combined bascule (or drawbridge) and suspension bridge began in 1886 when increased commercial traffic called for another river crossing, but one that would allow for tall-masted ships to access the ports further up river. Whilst originally considered an absurd design, Tower Bridge is now viewed as a landmark, a symbol of London and, perhaps, one of Britain’s most famous buildings.
Using an electro-hydraulic drive system to power the opening mechanism, the bascules continue to be raised to river traffic, which takes precedence over road traffic; while the upper walkway is now home to the Tower Bridge Exhibition, whose displays explain the history of this amazing structure.
Tower Bridge is an awesome demonstration of the link between functionality and design which has become iconic. At Qbic we have a love of design too and Tower Bridge is a short walk from Qbic design hotel London.
