For the most extensive collection of books in the city, a trip to the new Foyles on Charing Cross Road is in order. Located in the former Central Saint Martins School of Art building, the new Foyles is a browser’s paradise. The floor to ceiling glass facade and utilitarian interiors make it the best place to spend an afternoon of looking through books.
Set over five floors, Foyles stocks over 200,000 different titles on shelves that span four miles (6.5km). This, they claim, is the equivalent of lining one bank of the Thames with books from Battersea Power Station to the Tower of London. If you’re in need of refreshment or respite, take the glass elevator that runs through the middle of the building up to the cafe of the fifth floor. The coffee and cake selection is excellent and the long communal tables make a great spot to start reading any new acquisitions.
