You walk around a corner in a particularly unlovely side-street off the Charing Cross Road and you step from all the litter and fumes of the capital into a statuary-strewn country-house garden. This is Makers House – Burberry’s innovative way of showing the kind of work that went into its latest collection. Inside is a collection of craftsmen from embroiderers to silversmiths all squirreling away on their personal projects. The air is studious and friendly; we didn’t want to disturb the bookbinders because their work was so delicate but the sculptors and calligraphers were glad to talk through their processes. The whole thing is inspired by Virginia Woolf’s Orlando with fabrics, sketches and artworks on every wall adding to the Bohemian feeling. Upstairs is the rather smart Burberry collection for this season but the real stars are working downstairs. Beautiful and inspirational.
