Christmas puzzle-time

One of London’s most unusual institutions is the Museum of Brands, Packaging & Advertising, a west London cornucopia of retro wrappers, vintage adverts and product labels that explore consumerism through the ages. And just before Christmas it has opened its latest exhibition –the world of jigsaws. Over the years advertisers have offered out promotional jigsaws, but really this 250th anniversary of the advent of puzzles reflects the social history of Britain. In the collection you’ll find images celebrating royal occasions and exhibitions, the latest films and televisions, children’s characters, transport and technology, and the latest events. Believed to be the largest ever seen, this exhibition of missing pieces and broken images all comes from the collection of Robert Opie C. He sees the collection itself as like a jigsaw, each one adding to the picture of understanding society and its evolution.
