For the last couple of weeks the best place to catch any kind of modernist music has been at Bold Tendencies residency at the Peckham Car Park. It says something for the classical music scene in London that it’s taken such an unusual venue to bring so many under-heard works to the capital. Take this event for example; it’s rare to hear percussion-only pieces in regular concert halls, even rarer to hear a bunch of them of them in one go. Expect to hear selections from the likes of Chinese composer Guo Wenjing’s Drama for Three Pairs of Cymbals and Voices of Players and American composer Mark Applebaum’s absurdist piece Straitjacket, both of which you’re unlikely to hear anywhere else this year. Add in a lively, unpretentious crowd, and Peckham’s unparalleled after-party scene and this is turning into a London institution.
