A visit to Canary Wharf on the weekend might seem counterintuitive, but it’s the best time to visit the Museum of London Docklands. In amongst the skyscrapers the museum takes up four floors of a former warehouse. The exhibition space on the ground floor features photography and video installations by contemporary artists, but the museum’s permanent exhibitions are the real reason to visit. Each exhibition takes you on a multimedia tour of the city’s history, from the Roman era to the Black Death, Great Fire of London and two world wars. There’s no holding back on immersive history either – the mock Medieval street complete with characterisations of cobblers and ironsmiths is surprisingly convincing.
