On a warm spring-y evening, there really is no place like Haggerston. Perched right there on the canal at the heart of a quiet, hip east London village is Proud East, a big ol’ event space that caters to all sorts of lovely pop-ups. This month sees the arrival of Pop-up Japan – a collaboration with Japanese food purveyors Tonkotsu.
They’re going all out: the space has been transformed into a sprawling bar decked out in Japanese garb – with some ping pong and pool tables. There’ll be a series of events by Nomad Cinema showcasing some great Japanese related cinema – Lost in Translation, for example – But most importantly, the kitchen has been taken over by the Tonkotsu chefs who will be churning out crackin’ Japanese cuisine – from small bites such as veggie gyozas to their incredible pork broth ramen – round the clock.
With the incoming hot summer nights in mind, there’s an outdoor, canalside dining space and a large terrace to soak up those last hours of daylight. It’s bloody lovely.
