It used to be that the only difference between a science fiction film festival and a late-night adult theatre was that, other than the films they showed, the odds were that the audience at the adult theatre probably smelled better. These days however, science fiction film conventions have a much more mass appeal, showing films that you could actually take your significant other to without having to clean the kitchen for three months afterwards as payment. From the Star Trek reboot to Avatar, modern sci-fi is as mainstream as reduced fat hummous. So that’s why the sci-fi London Film Festival is worth your time. It’s interesting, challenging cinema that asks vitally interesting questions and pushes the boundaries of our common intellectual framework. For ten days, there will be amazing films, talks and events with six premieres and the ever-awesome 48-hour film contest. Not to be missed.
