Shakespeare hits Selfridges

If Much Ado About Nothing were a film being shot today, it would be directed by Richard Curtis. From the beginning it’s clear where things will head. The rose-tinted gaze of Claudio and Hero takes second place to the ‘merry war’ between Beatrice and Benedick, the sharp and original self confessed bachelor and spinster who loathe one another – except, of course, they don’t. But it’s Shakespeare, and so his superior language and dazzling wit elevate it far beyond anything Hugh Grant has ever done. As part of the Selfridges Shakespeare season, The Faction have produced and will perform Much Ado with a modern twist. The charity that aims to attract diverse audiences to exceptional theatre by making it accessible and affordable as well as putting a twenty-first-century spin on the old tale. Because some things don’t change. Expectation, reputation, and what people say all still matter hugely, and so the setting of Messina is brought to the modern day, and a landscape of high style, tabloid journalism, and CCTV.
