The Londoners

A city is nothing without its people. They construct its buildings, keep its traffic flowing, serve its customers, sweep its streets. Usually, those people want something in return for their effort. Generally in the form of money. It’s called work. The Londoners: Portrait of a Working City 1447 – 1980 is an exhibition of photographs, prints and drawings of those people that serve the city in some way. Taken from the London Metropolitan Archives, a vast repository of historical images, it spans the whole range, from a fifteenth century Alderman to a twentieth century trapeze artist, politicians to prostitutes, churchmen and feisty women. A visual record of a changing place and changing lives within it, it’s a fascinating showcase of the people who make a whole.
