There’s possibly the highest concentration of South Asian food around the streets of Qbic than possibly anywhere else outside the sub-Continent. And while Tayyabs’ and its famous lamb chops, are really very good, and worth all the praise they get, they’re not worth the preposterously long queues. And virtually all the Bangladeshi restaurants along Brick Lane excel in hard sell to passers by rather than making fine Indian food.

Instead, it’s worth trying out a small stand outside Bombay Grill on Whitechapel High Street that sells the classic Indian street snack, chaat. And specifically, the samosa chaat. A large, freshly fried, crispy vegetable samosa is put into a takeaway container, broken into pieces in front of you, followed by a ladle of chickpea curry sauce, with splashes of tamarind, chilli and garlic sauces, and finally a few chillis and onion slices. All for £1.50.

Freshly made jalebis emerge from the frier next to the samosa one. The jalebi is a bright orange swirl of flour and sugar, eaten during celebrations. Worth checking out.
