There will be over 300 performances of theatre companies, orchestras, comedians and various artists performing on 30 different stages. You can also visit an information market and a large book market. Kids can enjoy the Uitmarkt Junior, where there’s theatre and dance for infants, toddlers and older children. Acda and De Munnik will perfom on the Uitmarkt as part of their farewell tour. Furthermore, this year is mainly about new talent.
Ever since 2006, the Uitmarkt is being closed by the musical celebration Musical Sing-a-Long. During this event, various musical artists will sing musical hits from the current and coming theatre season, accompanied by the Metropole Orchestra. Every year this sing-a-long spectacle is being broadcast live on television. You can find the complete programme of the Uitmarkt here. Use the Uit-app to get the complete schedule on your mobile phone.
Since 1977, the Uitmarkt has traditionally been held during the last weekend of August, which means the festival is celebrating its 37th birthday this year. This free Amsterdam festival at the Uitmarkt is attracting around 450,000 visitors each year, reaching a record number of half a million visitors in 2006. Although the Leidse Square and the Museum Square have been the centre of the Uitmarkt for a few years now, the performances are spread around the entire city of Amsterdam and even the main stage cannot always be found always on the same spot. For example: in the past four years there were performances in the Vondelpark, and from 2006-2009 the Museum Square did not even take part in the Uitmarkt. Following the example set by Amsterdam, other cities have an Uitmarkt now as well. There is the R’Uitmarkt in Rotterdam and the Haags UIT Festival, both taking place the weekend after the Amsterdam Uitmarkt.
