Around 100 World Press Photo exhibitions are held every year to showcase the previous year’s prize-winning and news-related photographs all over the world. It’s the most popular travelling photography event, and we’re really looking forward to this year’s edition which opens on Saturday 16 April.
Professional press photographers, photo agencies, newspapers, and magazines from all over the world have submitted their top news-related pictures from the previous year, and the best works have been compiled into this year’s travelling exhibition of more than 200 images, creating an overview of how press photographers go about their work around the globe and how the press relates news through images.
You might still remember the winning World Press Photo of the Year 2013 by John Stanmeyer: an image of African migrants raising their phones in an attempt to catch an inexpensive signal from neighbouring Somalia. It’s just one of the images that left visitors to the World Press Photo exhibition awestruck. It’s not uncommon to see a tear in someone’s eye or feel goose pimples during your visit.
The exhibition at the Nieuwe Kerk on Dam Square is only in town for a few months, so catch it while you can. World Press Photo Amsterdam is open to the public from 16 April to 10 July. Tickets are available for €10 or just €3.50 if you are an iAmsterdam City Card holder. It is open daily, except for King’s Day on 27 April when it is closed for the celebrations of the King’s birthday – one of the Netherlands’ favourite national events. It is very easy to get to the World Press Photo exhibition from Qbic Hotel WTC Amsterdam. Just hop on tram number 5 towards Central Station and alight at Dam Square/Paleisstraat. The Nieuwe Kerk is located on the square.
