Why these works are happening

Over the next few years, the A10 Zuid highway will go underground — literally. A 1 km stretch of the A10, between Buitenveldert cemetery and the Beatrixpark, will be placed in a tunnel. That frees up 100,000 m² of space above ground for future development. Tunnel construction is expected to begin in 2027, but first, the area needs to be cleared of existing infrastructure like cables and pipelines.

When are the works taking place?

  • From 1 August – Preparations
    Bike removal, fencing, and setup of the construction area.
  • 4 to 16 August – South side of Mathijs Vermeulenpad & west side of Beethovenstraat
    Pavement removal, cable and pipe work, installation of a new water main.
  • 18 August to 13 September – Area near Spoorslag
    Adjustments to in- and outflows at Spoorslag and the area south of the A10. A temporary pedestrian route will be in place.
  • 25 August to 20 September – North side of Mathijs Vermeulenpad & WTC loading dock
    Works near the WTC loading dock (in coordination with local partners). Access will remain possible with alternating routes.
  • 22 September to 1 November – Final phase: Beethovenstraat west side
    Pavement restored, temporary installations removed, and all routes reopened.

How it might affect you

Pedestrians

  • The sidewalk on the west side of Beethovenstraat will be closed from 4 August to 1 November 2025.
  • You’ll be rerouted via the east side, with crossing points near the WTC and Gustav Mahlerlaan.
  • From 18 August to 13 September, a temporary walking route near Spoorslag will be available.
  • The Mathijs Vermeulenpad will remain open for pedestrians during all works.

Cyclists

  • The bike path on the west side of Beethovenstraat is closed from 4 August to 1 November.
  • Cyclists will be redirected via the east side, using the tunnel north of the A10.
  • The entrance to Mathijs Vermeulenpad will be closed for bikes from 4 August to 20 September.
  • Alternative bike parking is available at Mahlerplein (south side) and Strawinskylaan (north side).
  • Bike coaches will be present between 25 July and 1 August to guide and inform about bike removal.

Construction area & noise

  • All works use low-noise, low-vibration techniques to minimize disruption.
  • Work takes place Monday to Saturday, 07:00–19:00.
  • Construction traffic avoids peak hours and only runs 08:00–09:30 and 16:30–18:00
