Vondelpark Open Air Theatre: a rich history

Vondelpark Open Air Theatre is a typical Amsterdam tradition. The festival was first launched in 1974 and will this year celebrate its 40th anniversary as well as the 150-year existence of the Amsterdam Vondelpark. During the 70’s, the Amsterdam Vondelpark was a popular hangout for hippies and their music. The Muziekkoepel (in English: music pavilion) provided accommodation for organised performances. These happenings quickly boasted more visitors than the Vondelpark Parties. In 1974 they merged and together they formed the Vondelpark Open Air Theatre. The past few years Vondelpark Open Air has hosted Dutch pop artists like De Jeugd van Tegenwoordig and Waylon. The Netherlands Chamber Orchestra and the Nederlands Dans Theater (Dutch Dance Theatre) have also performed in the Vondelpark, as well as comedians like Jan Jaap van de Wal and Micha Wertheim.

Programme Vondelpark Open Air Theatre 2014

This year’s programme is again expected to be a versatile one. There will be a lot of music – from classic to pop – and let’s not forget about dance, theatre, cabaret and stand-up comedy. Every programme consists of a supporting act and a main act. During the supporting act there is room for young and new talent to show what they got, while the main act is always a famous artist or group. Vondelpark Open Air Theatre 2014 runs from June until August. During these summer months you can catch a performance three times a week: on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The complete programme of Vondelpark Open Air Theatre was announced in end of April. There will be a lot of different artists, like the winner of “Holland’s Best Singer Songwriter”  Douwe Bob, Scapino Ballet Rotterdam and the New Cool Collective. Take a look at the website for the complete programme.
